Rabies is a fatal disease and it can only be prevented by proper treatment and vaccination. Till date there is no treatment for Rabies in the entire world. It is caused by a virus which is spread by saliva of dogs, cats, bats, monkeys, jackal and fox. It doesn't spread by rat bite or squirrel bite. All pets should be vaccinated for rabies regularly. Pet handlers should receive pre exposure prophylaxis which is three dose schedule. Post exposure vaccination means injections after the dog bite. It includes five dose schedule. Most important thing is the wound toilet which means thorough cleaning of wounds with tap water for at least fifteen minutes. If the bite is severe and involves region near face then Rabies Immunoglobulin must also be given along with the Rabies vaccine.
