In this video, Doctor Andrea Furlan will explain the process to revert persistent pain, and that it involves active participation of the person that has pain. A multidisciplinary pain team can guide the person and provide the tools necessary for the person to change the course of their chronic pain. However, if the person does not use these tools, they will be stuck and continue suffering from constant pain. Ongoing pain is a sign of central sensitization, a process that involves neuroplasticity and memory. Reverting pain is different from pain management. Reverting pain means the body can undo the central sensitization. While managing pain is important, it means that the person will learn how to use all tools available to them and enjoy a good quality of life. The tools that Doctor Furlan talks about are classified as the 5Ms: medications, mind-body, movement, manual therapies and modalities. Many people abandon the process of reverting chronic pain because they don't know how to set SMART goals. In this video, Doctor Furlan will give 3 examples of SMARTer goals and teach the principles of using them.
