Disney Mulan (2020) - Disney Live-Action Movie Starring Liu Yifei | Costume Concept

Disney recently announced a live-action remake of Mulan to come out March 2020. Crystal Liu Yifei is a Chinese actress and singer with a background in martial arts, so in my eyes, she is perfect for Mulan. The new remake is set to be in theatres next year in 2020 and I can’t wait. Unfortunately it won’t be a musical, but perhaps it is for the better since suddenly having the characters sing might be out of place with the overall tone of the movie. I hope at least a song or two makes it into the movie in a way that merges seamlessly with the tone of the film (such as Lavender’s Blue in Disney’s 2015 Cinderella). Anyway, onto the costume design for Crystal Liu as Disney's Mulan. In my mind, this is the costume design for Mulan after she has been revealed as a girl. However, this does not mean she must be in her girly pretty princess outfit. I still wanted her female side to be shown in her 'manly' outfit. I made certain decisions based on this including having her hair half up so her iconic bun is still there, but balanced with her loose hair. For the majority of the costume, design details are based on the original cartoon version. For example, the green and brown earth tones are consistent with the cartoon, and same with her bun hairstyle and hair ribbon/tie. There is one little detail which I thought was a nice touch, and that is the dragon detailing on her shoulder. I thought it would make a cute idea to have it represent Mushu and therefore she will always have Mushu by her side, even when Mushu is not there. Thank you if you read this far.
